As well as being the most ethnically diverse regional city in the UK with a population made up of 187 different nationalities \u00ad Birmingham is also a City&nbsp;of&nbsp;Sanctuary,&nbsp;welcoming&nbsp;refugees&nbsp;from&nbsp;war-torn&nbsp;areas,&nbsp;such&nbsp;as&nbsp;Syria.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, the challenges they face when arriving in the West Midlands put them&nbsp;at risk of exploitation \u00adas they are twice as likely to be unemployed, have little or no knowledge of public health messages or their rights, so struggle to access&nbsp;services.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a community cohesion statement which provides the council\u2019s policy position on&nbsp; integration. There are also a number of neighbourhood offices where immigrants can obtain information, whilst bespoke centers for certain immigrants are&nbsp; provided by the local community i.e. Asian resource centre for people from Indian&nbsp;sub -continent.&nbsp;There&nbsp;are&nbsp;also&nbsp;citizen&nbsp;advice&nbsp;bureaus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Information is provided on the council\u2019s website, but this is limited in detail and\u00a0 immigrants have no \u2018one stop shop\u2019 to access services. The services are fragmented\u00a0and\u00a0only\u00a0available\u00a0online\u00a0in English.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u200bIn general there is no joined up or digital resource available to immigrants in Birmingham, with newly arrived people reliant on members of their own\u00a0community\u00a0to\u00a0explain\u00a0access\u00a0to\u00a0local\u00a0services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How will Birmingham benefit from the easyRights solution?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rymywOI2fL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EasyRights Service Focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Service 1: Supporting Migrants to check if their vehicle is compliant for the Clean Air Zone (CAZ)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Description of the service:<\/strong>&nbsp;To raise the awareness of the Clean Air Zone (delayed to January 2021 due to the COVID-19). The Clean Air Zone is an area where the most polluted vehicles will be charged (\u00a38 per day) to enter the zone. If the charge is not paid, a penalty charge notice (\u00a3120) will be sent to the person in charge of the vehicle. There are many faith groups within the zone, businesses, shopping centre and the Children\u2019s hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure all migrants understand what the Clean Air Zone is and how to check if their vehicle is compliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Service 2: The rights of migrants\/hard to reach communities to participate in public consultation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Description of the service:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>We want migrants to have a say in prioritising services and sharing our vision for Birmingham. This challenge has been identified through other consultations that have taken place and through conversations meetings with NGO\u2019s. BeHeard is the system used by Birmingham City Council to record\/store consultations and surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Service 3: Step by step guide to register and complete an online assessment tool to access learning&nbsp;English<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Description of the service:&nbsp;<\/strong>Birmingham is a large, diverse city with an extensive range of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) needs. From the learners\u2019 perspective, information is confusing. Creating one point registration sign in and assessment for all learners in the City will allow for better coordination between providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stakeholders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local authorities which are helping address this challenge are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Public Sector:\u00a0<\/strong>Adult Social Directorate, Prevention, Communities and Migration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mifriendlycities.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>MiFriendly Cities<\/strong><\/a>: services include Syrian resettlement scheme, welfare and benefits guidance,\u00a0employment housing, immigration, new project around asylum seekers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public Health<\/strong>: Health campaigns\/communications emphasis to further target Black and Minority\u00a0Ethnic groups and other minority groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Current Situation Birmingham is a friendly, cosmopolitan city which is proud of the warm welcome it extends to people from all corners of the globe, regardless of their situation.
